Hedy Lamarr was an Austrian-American actress who also made important contributions to the field of technology. During World War II, she was concerned about the safety of military communications and developed a novel idea for a secret communication system that could not be easily jammed by enemy forces.
Lamarr worked with composer George Antheil to develop a frequency-hopping system that would allow messages to be transmitted wirelessly without interference. This system used a piano roll to randomly switch between frequencies, making it difficult for anyone to intercept the transmission. Although the technology was not immediately put into use, it laid the foundation for the development of modern wireless communication systems, including Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Lamarr's work in the field of technology was largely unrecognized during her lifetime, but it has since been acknowledged as an important contribution to the development of wireless transmission technology.
